Clare Daly responds after Ukraine put her on a list of people allegedly promoting Russian propaganda

Irish MEP Clare Daly has responded after being put on a list compiled by Ukraine’s intelligence service which claims to “promote narratives consistent with Russian propaganda”.

The list includes 72 public figures around the world whom Ukraine believes are sharing harmful narratives.

Ms Daly is the only Irish figure on the list. Others include US Republican Senator Rand Paul, former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and US journalist Glenn Greenwald.

The list, titled “Speakers promoting narratives consistent with Russian propaganda,” was published by the Center for Countering Disinformation, a unit within Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council headed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ms Daly is accused of sharing two narratives – that sanctions on Russia “make innocent people suffer” and that the Ukraine conflict is “a proxy war between NATO and Russia”.

In a statement released to this morning, Ms Daly said it was a “blacklist issued by a propaganda department of the Ukrainian government”.

The left-wing MEP, who criticized the response of NATO and Western countries to the Russian invasion, as well as the invasion itself, added that “Western intervention has only prolonged the war and contributed to continued death and destruction.”

“Both comments attributed to me are absolutely correct and I stand above them. Increasingly, it is ordinary citizens of Europe who are paying the price for sanctions and it will only get worse when the gas is turned off,” she said.

“Russia is responsible for starting the war, but the role of the international community should be to end it with diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire and a negotiated peace. This was rejected by the US and NATO, who instead chose to use Ukraine to wage war with Russia, and it is ordinary citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Europe who are suffering now.

“This is not ‘Russian propaganda’, but my opinion, which is shared by many internationally.”

Ms Daly said the list was “not a credible document”, adding: “It is an outrageous attempt to censor international opinion by a government that has already banned opposition parties and independent media and purged many of its officials.”

Ms Daly continued: “The list includes a diverse group of people who politically have next to nothing in common, except that they are all critical of NATO and Western politics towards Ukraine. This is democracy: having the right to express one opinion and have another opinion. That Ukraine is trying to stop this and to narrow the range of ideas expressed in our societies is a reflection of the behavior for which we rightly criticize Russia.

“The purpose of this list and the consequences of its inscription are not specified, but it certainly refutes any notion that the Ukrainian government is a staunch democrat.” Clare Daly responds after Ukraine put her on a list of people allegedly promoting Russian propaganda
