Class of 2022: When choosing Leaving Cert subjects, be aware that some subjects have more impact on college admission than others

Many third and fourth year students are now choosing their Leaving Cert subject. While you should focus on subjects you enjoy and are good at, some subjects can affect college admission.

Some people believe that you must have a language in Leaving Cert to get into college. This is not the case and many students do not like the language. However, language proficiency is important and can have a positive impact on career development.

The three NUI universities – UCD, UCC and NUIG – and some of their affiliated colleges require applicants to present English, Irish and a third language in order to take most courses.

A student who has been exempted from studying Irish due to academic difficulties may also be exempt from the ‘third’ language presentation requirement for these institutions. For others, not choosing a language can disqualify them from a significant number of courses.

Maynooth University, also a NUI university, has eliminated the requirement to present a third language for admission to most courses including in their business and law schools. Requirements still apply for arts and humanities courses.

Those who do not wish to learn a foreign language can still attend Trinity College Dublin and the University of Limerick, where English and another language are required. Students can also study at DCU, universities of technology and institutes of technology, where admission requirements are in English and math.

Some students who have difficulty with the language will have to choose between the possibility of getting a higher grade by dropping their language in favor of another subject and keeping all the courses in the NUI colleges for them. .

Students may also want to consider whether they should take a science subject. Some students may need to consider whether or not they should take the dual science exam.

A significant number of courses on CAO require applicants to present a scientific subject for admission. All of these are of a technical, scientific or health nature.

Course requirements can vary from institution to institution, so it is essential that students double-check the requirements for any course they may wish to pursue. This can be done on

Most courses that require applicants to present a science topic will be looking for a science subject and this could be a lab science. Applicants should check to see if the course they are interested in only accepts lab science or will also accept math, applied math, or computer science instead.

A small number of courses may also require two sciences, but mathematics may be accepted as a second science.

A little research in the field will help you to proceed with confidence.
