ALAN SHEARER called Cambridge FA Cup hero Joe Ironside to congratulate him on his winning goal against Newcastle.
The U striker revealed he received a personal message from his idol following the shock League One win on Saturday.
Ironside, 28, scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute to seal a 1-0 win in the third round.
It sparked wild celebrations among the 5,000 traveling Cambridge fans at St James’ Park.
Shearer said: “I called him this morning to say congratulations. I think he probably thought it was some kind of joke.
“But I just think it’s the right thing to do. What a day for him, what a day for Cambridge.”
Ironside said he also received a text from Toon legend Shearer, 51, after the game and it was set up by former Cambridge striker Dion Dublin.
Ironside said: “I have a [a message] off Shearer this morning. Yes, it’s a great touch, it’s classy.
“Commentator Dion set it up – I appreciate that from both.”
Ironside did not give details about Shearer’s message but said it meant a lot to him.
He added: “I wasn’t expecting it on Monday morning.
“Fair play – I really appreciate it, and thank him and Dion for arranging it.”
Cambridge produced a stellar team performance to set up a fourth round draw with Luton.
