Clean-up work begins on Sackville Road in Brighton following a rubbish fire

A MAJOR clean-up operation is underway to clear a huge pile of rubbish that was dumped after rubbish caught fire in a rubbish truck.

The refuse truck was forced to empty its load in Sackville Road, Brighton, after the fire broke out in the wagon this morning (September 4th).

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

However, the council suspects it was caused by a lithium battery from a phone or similar device.

Cityclean staff are currently on site and a crane has been arranged to clean up the mess “as soon as possible”.

The area has been cordoned off and drivers have been warned there will be travel disruptions due to the incident.

A spokesman for the council said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Services were present and extinguished the fire.

“This involved dumping the contents of the vehicle onto the street for disposal.

“Council Cityclean staff are present and have cordoned off the area. A specialist company with a crane was commissioned to remove the rubbish as quickly as possible.

“Until then there may be disruption to traffic and travel on Sackville Road. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

The spokesman also warned against throwing batteries in the trash.

“These should not be thrown in the trash but taken to a bank, recycling center, one of the household waste recycling centers, TECH or at Curry’s or B&Q who will take them back,” he said.
