A HUGE cleanup has begun to remove a famous tree that fell in the city yesterday.
Workers are currently at the park in Montpelier Crescent after a large holm oak fell to the ground around 12.30pm on Wednesday.
Tree surgeons are working to remove it and it can be seen being chopped into pieces with large machines.
People gathered for a candlelight vigil last night and shared memories, with many saying it was a big part of their childhood while others spent happy afternoons there in the sunshine.
It appears to have split in three along the trunk – and while the cause is not yet known, it is believed to have been caused in part by recent extreme heat and drought periods.
Pictures from the crime scene last night show the devastation caused by the tree after it fell.
Brighton and Hove City Council has been asked for an opinion.
