As part of Charlie Bird’s “Climb With Charlie” initiative, there will be at least 155 separate fundraising climbs across the country next Saturday.
Harley Bird will meet Croagh Patrick to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.
The former RTÉ news correspondent, who was diagnosed with MND last year, has already raised more than €700,000 through his initiative ahead of the April 2 rise.
Tens of thousands of people are taking part in the 155 Climb with Charlie fundraising climbs across Ireland next Saturday, with many of the nation’s most famous faces throwing their support behind the event.
Hundreds of people will also go climbing in the US, South Africa, Australia and Spain, organizing walks and runs across mountains, parklands and town squares.
Charlie and his group of family, friends and supporters are currently in the final days of training ahead of their own fundraising climb on Croagh Patrick this weekend.
Charlie Bird said he was “overwhelmed” by the campaign’s success.
“Originally, I, friends and family were supposed to climb Croagh Patrick. Since then I have been overwhelmed by the amazing generosity, support and kindness of people in Ireland and around the world.
“I’m really impressed and inspired that so many thousands of people are taking part in Climb with Charlie events around the world. As the big day fast approaches, I would like to urge everyone to donate whatever they can to support the amazing work that the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta do every day.
“Donations can be made and details of local fundraising climbs can be found on our campaign site www.climbwithcharlie.ie. If you are physically unable to participate in a climb or walk, it would even mean as much as lighting a candle to show your support,” Charlie said.
Charlie encourages everyone to participate in their own way. People can support the campaign by climbing a hill, going to the local park or going shopping.
