A close associate of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was the target of today’s joint police operation in Lanzarote, Independent.ie can reveal.
The specialist Gardaí is understood to have been collaborating with Spanish detectives in an investigation into illegal travel documents.
The investigation has been going on for several months.
No arrests were made after today’s searches, but a number of electronic devices were confiscated for examination.
The Lanzarote property that is now the target of the joint operation is not where “The Monk” lived for years before the Hutch/Kinahan feud erupted.
However, it was used by his close junior partner.
Hutch, 59, is in custody charged with the 2016 murder of David Byrne, a member of the Kinahan gang, at the Regency Hotel. His lawyers filed a motion with the Special Criminal Court last week to dismiss the murder charges because there was not enough evidence to bring him to justice.
In a statement released tonight, a Garda spokesman said: “This morning a team of Irish detectives searched the home of an Irish national residing in Lanzarote as a result of an ongoing intelligence operation by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Spain, who is suspected of involvement in a Spain-based organized criminal gang.
“Today’s operation in Spain reflects An Garda Síochána’s continued commitment to fighting international organized crime gangs in collaboration with European partner services.”
They added that investigations are ongoing.
