A close associate of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was the target of today’s joint police operation in Lanzarote, can reveal.

The specialist Gardaí is understood to have been collaborating with Spanish detectives in an investigation into illegal travel documents.

The investigation has been going on for several months.

No arrests were made after today’s searches, but a number of electronic devices were confiscated for examination.

In a statement released tonight, a Garda spokesman said: “This morning a team of Irish detectives searched the home of an Irish national residing in Lanzarote as a result of an ongoing intelligence operation by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Spain, who is suspected of involvement in a Spain-based organized criminal gang.

“Today’s operation in Spain reflects An Garda Síochána’s continued commitment to fighting international organized crime gangs in collaboration with European partner services.”
