THE most popular soft drink IN THE WORLD has made it into the metaverse.
Coca-Cola announced Monday that it will be launching a gaming-inspired version of its bubbly pop virtually before it hits shelves in the real world.
Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Byte will “bring the taste of pixels to life,” according to the US beverage giant.
Exactly how it manages that remains a mystery, but it will first be available in a Metaverse-like world in the video game Fortnite.
The Metaverse is a digital space for people to socialize, work and play, accessed through virtual reality glasses.
Versions of the technology are being developed by companies like Facebook parent company Meta and Fortnite maker Epic Games.
Coca-Cola has partnered with gaming organization PWR to help create Pixel Point, a custom island created in Fortnite Creative.
Fortnite Creative is a separate mode within the game that allows corporations as well as regular users to create their own worlds.
Game players can then explore the purpose-built islands just as they would in the game’s various competitive modes.
Whoever enters Pixel Point can try out mini-games on the topic of cola and “try out” the new beverage taste – virtually, of course.
The new flavor will be available in physical form in US stores on May 2nd. There’s no word yet on a UK launch.
It remains unclear how the drink tastes, though Coca-Cola describes it as “transcending the digital and physical worlds.”
It’s the second off-the-wall offering from the Coca‑Cola Creations project, which creates weird flavors for its Gen Z customers.
Oana Vlad of the company said: “We wanted to create an innovative flavor inspired by the playfulness of pixels and rooted in the experiences that games enable.
“Just as pixels power the digital connection, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Byte brings people together to share moments of true magic.”
Coca-Cola isn’t the first company to jump on the Metaverse bandwagon as interest in the mysterious technology grows.
Last month, Heineken hosted an event at the Metaverse where it offered an opportunity to “drink” the brand’s first virtual beer.
Recently, the inaugural Metaverse Fashion Week saw virtual appearances from high-end brands like Estée Lauder, Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana.
