Coincidence: Indie horror developer launches Kickstarter to create game for Pokémon Mini

Hands up – who used to have a Pokemon Mini? The microconsole was launched in Japan and North America in 2001 – just before the GameCube came out – and in Europe the following year. It came in three colors, had ten games released for it (only 4 made it to America, an additional game made it to Europe) and is still the smallest cartridge-based system Nintendo has ever made.
Despite the short runtime and tiny library, fans found a way to reverse engineer the tiny little system years ago, and many have been developing homebrew games for the system for some time. But an indie developer is going one step further and wants to create a brand new entry in their horror series for the miniature system.
Sungrand Studio is no stranger to developing games on legacy hardware. The developer of silver falls series is currently developing seven new games for the 3DS and Wii U, with one game even getting Balance Board support. After the announcement of these seven new additions, many fans asked if more ports or new games could be made in this indie horror franchise for older consoles. And trust that some dedicated fans are asking for a new Silver Falls game for the much-forgotten Pokémon Mini.
However, Sungrand Studio has listened and started a Kickstarter to make this dream a reality. Is correct; In 2022 or 2023 we’re getting a brand new Pokemon minigame.
The Kickstarter itself is relatively modest – for AU$700, Sungrand Studio has promised to purchase a Pokémon Mini and develop a new game for the system. Not only that, the ROM will be free for everyone. The developer also says that they will get a second console to test the infrared functionality to allow this new game to be played in multiplayer, but cannot guarantee that this will work.
If the Kickstarter raises enough money – AU$1,400 – Sungrand will even shift its release schedule and aim to release this Pokémon Mini entry later this year.
With the limited pixels in the miniature console, we can imagine that a horror game could be quite terrifying on this tiny little machine. Of course, finding one in top condition will be a challenge, but Sungrand is up for the challenge.
The Kickstarter is open until May 28 4:27 am PDT / 7:27 am EDT / 12:27 pm BST / 1:27 pm CETso if you want to see a brand new Pokemon Mini game, you know what to do.
You can learn more about the unique horror series Silver Falls on the official website. And if you think Pokémon Mini is an unusual choice for a brand new game in 2022, consider what it must be like to create one brand new game for an old Nokia clamshell phone. We recommend you Sunrand Studio.
Tell us if you still have a Pokémon Mini or have played any of the Silver Falls games!
