You know how it goes: You’ve known someone your whole life, swam together for all those years, and then one day you wake up and decide you’ve had enough. It’s the incredibly awkward dilemma that Brendan Gleeson’s Cole and Colin Farrell’s Pádraic find themselves prelude to the events of “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
Life comes to you quickly. “I just don’t like you anymore,” Cole bluntly informed his old friend. “But you liked me yesterday,” protested Padraic. Things took a turn for the worse from there, as the tiny Irish island (and trouble-making supporting cast, to boot) offered neither of the two free-spirited foes any sense of consolation from the other. With both actors working together several times over the years, the premise is sure to make for an ironic meta twist to the events of the story. In addition to Farrell and Gleeson, the film also stars Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.
Expect initial reactions to drop after its worldwide premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival later this September. The North American premiere will take place after the Toronto Film Festival, before a wide release on October 21, 2022.
Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, “The Banshees of Inisherin” follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who feel stuck as Colm suddenly ended their friendship. A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), tries to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his old friend’s resolve, and when Colm issues a desperate ultimatum, events quickly escalate, with shocking consequences.
