Collection of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang memorabilia to go under the hammer


A collection of items from the 1968 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang classic will soon be in the spotlight, it has been announced.

His sale, hosted by Excalibur Auctions, will offer fans the chance to pick up a memento of the much-loved family movie.

Among the items for sale are a replica version of Grandpa Potts’ flying hut, a child’s bike based on the famous flying vehicle and sketches by the late artist Rowland Emett, who designed all of Caractacus Pott’s inventions.

The original film is based on the novel by James Bond author Ian Fleming and stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Anne Howes and Lionel Jeffries.

A full-size model of a wooden, glass, and metal flying hut, used as the backdrop for Grandfather Potts’ song Posh, is one of the auction’s highest-rated items and is estimated around £3,500 – £4,500.

Emmett’s work includes illustrations for “The Potts Cruft-de-Luxe Dog Tidy” featured in the film and carries Emett’s captions explaining how each part of the invention works.

Original work in ink and pencil with a letter of origin and estimated to be worth between £2,500 and £3,000.

The rare 1960s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang children’s bike was made by the Pines factory and is estimated to be worth £1,000 – £1,500.

The item is molded in plastic and finished in gold with a grille, metal bumpers and extended wings, one of only 12 recorded in the world.

Jonathan Torode from Excalibur Auctions said: “We are delighted to be able to offer an exceptional private collection of items that come directly from the source for the film.

“We are sure that there will be a lot of competition for these works from all over the world, as it has been, and is, an iconic film that continues to delight this generation. to another generation.

“Although the total low estimate for the collection is currently £10,000, I think due to the film’s continued popularity, it may well surpass this.”

The auction – Movies, TV Posters & Music & Memorabilia – will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2022.
