The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced that actor Adam Sandler will receive the Mark Twain Award for American Humor.
Over the years, this prestigious award has belonged to such luminaries as Richard Pryor, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, George Carlin and Ellen DeGeneres.
Now Sandler will be presented with next year’s award at the gala on March 19.
Kennedy Center President Deborah F Rutter said: “Adam Sandler has delighted audiences for more than three decades with his films, music and tenure as a fan-loved actor. like on SNL.
“Adam has created characters that make us laugh, cry, and laugh.”
The 56-year-old comedian, who this year stars in the Netflix basketball comedy series Hustle, has created a list of comedic films that include Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Grown Ups, Big Daddy, The Longest Yard and the Water Boy.
His portrayal of Howard Ratner in Uncut Gems earned Sandler a number of nominations and awards, including winning the National Board of Review and Independent Spirit awards.
