Comedy In My Skin is the success story of 2022 Welsh Baftas

The comedy In My Skin proved the success story of Welsh Baftas in 2022, called Bafta Cymru, as it won three awards at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.

ne host even joked about its winning streak as the five-part series was awarded best director, best drama and best screenplay for its depiction of teenage life in Wales.

Dream Horse, nominated in five categories, won two awards, including best actor for Owen Teale’s performance.

The Game Of Thrones actor sometimes seemed speechless during his acceptance speech, and repeatedly said he was “blown away”.

Bwyd Byd Epic Chris, a cooking show hosted by Chris Roberts, also won two awards for best host and best entertainment.

In My Skin screenwriter Kayleigh Llewellyn, who has been called back to the stage three times, expressed gratitude to her mother for inspiring her.

Pausing from time to time to apologize for swearing, she told the crowd: “The greatest gift she has ever given me is opening up the world of storytelling.

“Every night she took time to read us a story, and then every weekend she took us to the Cabalfa Library.

“She let us run around and fill our arms with books and we just chat – like, ‘oh these are free?’

“So thank you mom and thank you to the public library. I hope the Tories stop rubbing against you. “

Television executive Shane Allen initially pretended that Llewellyn’s drama had won another award, in reality for Black Mirror producer Annabel Jones.

“This award goes to In My Skin as well,” he said, before adding: “It hasn’t – they haven’t had time to get back to their seats yet.”

Best actress went to Emilia Jones for her role as Coda, in which she plays the only hearing member of a deaf family from Massachusetts, USA.

When Jones was unable to accept the award in person, the cameras focused on a placid Joanna Scanlan, who was nominated for the same category for her role in After Love.

The Bafta Cymru Award for Best Editing (Reality) went to Dan Young for Slammed, while Elen Pierce Lewis won the Editing Award (Fiction).

Chloe Fairweather, who received the Breakthrough Actor award for Dying To Divorce, paid tribute to the “courage and guts” of the women portrayed in the film about domestic violence.

Other winners include Affairs Of The Art for short film, Claire Williams of The Pursuit Of Love for hair and makeup, and Coronavirus: A Care Home’s Story, for news, current affairs and events. Comedy In My Skin is the success story of 2022 Welsh Baftas
