Commonwealth Games: Matt Walls involved in serious crash while playing track

Day five of the 2022 Commonwealth Games promises to be a blast. Team England are chasing more gold medals in artistic gymnastics, with one of the best hopes coming from Alice Kinsella, who is able to make up for her disappointment in the women’s all-around final. Two days after her tearful exit from the final, the Birmingham-born Kinsella will fight for gold in the women’s individual apparatus on both beam and floor. Meanwhile, Jake Jarman competes in the vault final and Joe Fraser competes on parallel bars and high bar. If victorious, both would end their games with four gold medals each.

Add to that the inspirational story of Cyrille Tchatchet, who is aiming for a fairytale ending with a medal in men’s weightlifting. Tchatchet left the Cameroonian team during the Glasgow 2014 games, contemplating suicide and was eventually arrested and seeking asylum. He is now a psychiatric nurse in the West Midlands, the proud holder of a British passport and a medal contender in the men’s 96kg weightlifting category. Can he claim a Commonwealth Medal today?

Elsewhere, Heather Knight could return to captain England against South Africa from injury with another win for the hosts that would put them on the brink of the semi-finals. Adam Peaty is in the 50m breaststroke and European judo champion Gemma Howell competes in the women’s 63kg class, with Walsall’s Daniel Powell competing in the men’s 73kg class.

All of this is before mentioning that athletics is on. The morning session offers a first look at the heptathlon with England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson – the 2019 world champion and defending Commonwealth champion. Follow the latest updates from Commonwealth games below:
