ComReg collects up to 448 million euros from the issuance of “5G” licenses

Mobile operators Eir, Imagine, Three and Vodafone will collectively pay the state €448m for access to spectrum supporting fast 5G mobile coverage.

The four operators secured access to the additional telecommunications capacities in an auction held by the communications regulator ComReg.

The main phase of the MBSA2 award process has determined the winners and prizes for the 470 MHz spectrum, which is distributed in four valuable frequency bands (700 MHz, 2.1 GHz, 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz tapes) is provided.

The frequency bands are suitable to provide 5G and broad mobile coverage and to increase the capacity of mobile and fixed networks, ComReg said.

An award of spectrum entails the obligation for operators to meet coverage targets set by the regulator, including such as population share and geographic coverage of services.

The awards will last for 19 years, with the final prize paid to the state pending the decision of a court case, ComReg said.

Allocating the capacity would significantly increase the spectrum available for fixed and mobile services (by 46 percent) and make it easier for operators to make long-term investment decisions.
