Conclusion of Leinster Under-20 Football Championship: Ryan O’Dwyer saves the dubs while Kildare and Offaly also progress to the semis

Seven points down at the break, Dublin defeated Westmeath by a deserved five-point margin in ideal footballing conditions at Parnell Park.

estmeath dominated the first half with Senan Baker, son of Clare hurling legend Ollie, leading the charge. Blood sub Peter Pierson took Baker’s pass and fired home to give the Midlanders a 1-9, 0-5 lead at halftime.

Dublin came right back into play when Ryan O’Dwyer netted the ball from point-blank range within four minutes of the restart.

From then on, the home side took over virtually every line of the pitch, with half-time substitute Sean Kinsella being very influential and Adam Waddick and Senan Forker absolutely leading the way in midfield.

McGauran scored the visitors’ only goal of half-time in the 44th minute, but an O’Dwyer free-kick put Dublin ahead in the 51st minute and they drove to victory in the closing stages.

Kildare reached a Leinster semi-final against All-Ireland champions Offaly next Thursday but endured a major scare at the Manguard Plus Center of Excellence in Newbridge before securing victory.

No such drama was in sight as Kildare rocketed to a nine-point lead after goals from Dean O’Donoghue and Daniel Lynam. But Laois scored over Paddy Hosey and Davin McEvoy to score four goals at half-time.

Kildare took control again in the third quarter and extended their lead to seven but Laois, led by Colin Dunne, rallied in the last ten minutes making things very nervous for Kildare and they were inches away from making one to snag a sensational late winner.

With just two points between the sides, in the final action of the game, a loose pass from Kildare full-back Dean O’Donoghue gave Oisin Hooney a glorious chance to score a decisive goal, but for Laois his shot with the last shot was excruciating of the game went just inches wide of the post.

Reigning Leinster and All-Ireland champion Offaly set up a Leinster semi-final with Kildare after slaying Carlow in the sword.

In a one-sided affair, Offaly were a far better team than the one who stumbled over the line in last week’s opening round win over Louth.

They led 1-6 to 0-0 after 10 minutes, with a goal from Keith O’Neill cheering them on as they progressed through the aisles against an outmatched Carlow team.

They continued their show in the first half with two more goals just before half-time from Darragh Flynn and John Furlong and the result was in no doubt at half-time as Declan Kelly’s side led 3-9, 0-4 at the break .

While their batting rate slowed in the second half, Faithful County had plenty in reserve. Eoin Murphy replaced the excellent Keith O’Neill and found the net to add to Carlow’s woes, while his substitute Jamie Guing added a point to his match-winning performance in defeating Louth last week.
