Confirmed: Munster GAA move Cork-Kerry clash from Pairc Ui Rinn to Fitzgerald Stadium

Munster GAA chiefs confirmed their football semi-final match between Cork and Kerry has been moved to the Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney, citing limited capacity as one of the reasons behind the decision to move from Pairc Ui Rinn.

According to the home-away rules between the teams, Cork should have home advantage for this year’s clash. And with Pairc Ui Chaoimh unavailable due to an Ed Sheeran concert, they had chosen Pairc Ui Rinn as their home venue.

Cork football management, supported by its county board, pushed hard this week for the match to be staged in Cork. However, at a meeting of the provincial CCC tonight, they confirmed the move to Killarney, pointing out that the average attendance for the last three league games between the sides has been over 22,000.

Pairc Ui Rinn will be able to accommodate around 11,000 once the work is complete.

Munster bosses also confirmed the game had been brought forward to 6pm, with a women’s football match due to be played on that day.

“The game was initially set for Páirc Uí Rinn due to the unavailability of Páirc Uí Chaoimh with the expectation that Páirc Uí Rinn would hold 15,000 spectators,” Munster said in a statement.

“Following an independent statutory annual health and safety inspection which revealed a number of issues at the site, the capacity has been reduced to 9,200 and even if all the necessary work is completed on time this is the maximum capacity that can be achieved at the venue 11,000.

“With the average attendance for the last 3 Cork v Kerry games at the Munster Senior Football Championship at Páirc Uí Chaoimh being over 22,000 (excluding the Covid restricted game in 2020), Munster Council has decided to cancel the Munster Semi 2022 – Final between teams at Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney on Saturday 7th May at 18:00 earlier. This game is also expected to form a double header with Munster LFGA (more details to come).”

Cork have home advantage for the next two meetings between the sides.

“Based on the long-standing home-away agreement between Kerry and Cork, following this year’s game in Killarney, the next two boroughs meetings at the Munster Senior Football Championship will be at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. A similar arrangement was used successfully during the recent redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.” Confirmed: Munster GAA move Cork-Kerry clash from Pairc Ui Rinn to Fitzgerald Stadium
