Connacht had the services of club captain Jarrad Butler for two more seasons.
ndy Friend said he was “delighted” to have secured the services of qualified Irish Australian, who has been in the province since 2017 and has made 90 appearances.
Although Ireland international Jack Carty has led the team on the pitch this season, Butler is the club captain and has been in consistent form for the club since his arrival.
He is eligible to come to Ireland for residency in 2020, but has yet to be called up by Andy Farrell.
However, winning his signature is a positive step for Connacht, who are in a real battle for next season’s Heineken Champions Cup after their game in Edinburgh last weekend.
Friends will lose Ultan Dillane, Abraham Papali’i and Sammy Arnold from his team next season, but Josh Murphy is on his way from Leinster and there is much speculation that Adam Byrne and Peter Dooley will also move west. while Carty has demonstrated its commitment by signing a long-term contract.
Butler’s pledge is another big step forward for the western province ahead of a defining month after the Six Nations ends.
“Jarrad has all the qualities you look for in a club captain,” said Friend.
“He leads with his actions on and off the pitch, and commands the respect of his teammates. I am delighted he has chosen to stay at Connacht during a really exciting period for everyone at the club. ”
