Connacht’s Tom Daly misses the first leg of the Heineken Cup clash with Leinster but will be back for the date at the Aviva Stadium

Tom Daly has avoided a lengthy suspension following his red card against Leinster, meaning he should be available for his old team in the second leg of the Heineken Champions Cup round of 16 at the Aviva Stadium.

The Carlow native was sent off for a head-high tackle on Ciaran Frawley in last Saturday’s Derby defeat and that decision was upheld by Welsh Magistrate Declan Goodwin.

He deemed the offense worthy of a six-game suspension, but factored in Daly’s good discipline and on-field apology to Frawley and reduced it to three.

The third of those games is the second leg but under current World Rugby rules Daly can get out of this suspension by undertaking a ‘tackle intervention programme’.

He will miss this week’s game against Benetton and Friday week’s first leg but will be back for the Good Friday showdown at the Aviva.

A URC statement said: “The red card disciplinary hearing for Tom Daly of Connacht was heard by a magistrate after he was arrested on Saturday 26 April 2018.

“The player has received a red card under Rule 9.13 in the second minute on the sports field – A player must not attack an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to charge an opponent above the line of shoulders even if the tackle begins below the line of shoulders.

“The magistrate overseeing the disciplinary process, Declan Goodwin (Wales), determined that the player’s actions amounted to the threshold of a red card and that foul play warranted a sanction. Mr. Goodwin determined the mid-range entry point, resulting in a six (6) week suspension.

“But considering the player has accepted that foul play warrants a red card, has a clean record, he credited himself on the field to Ciaran Frawley (Leinster No 12) and the on-field officials for his exemplary behavior during the trial sorry these considerations entitled him to a full (50 percent) reduction.

“The player has been suspended for a period of three games.

Schedules Tom Daly is not available for:

Connacht vs Benetton (2 April)

Connacht vs Leinster (8 April)

Connacht v Leinster (15 April – This may be replaced by the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme).” Connacht’s Tom Daly misses the first leg of the Heineken Cup clash with Leinster but will be back for the date at the Aviva Stadium
