Conservative pundit makes gloomy predictions about Republicans and Trump

Conservative commentator Charlie Sykes said that as long as the GOP remains dependent on Donald Trump, the only way the GOP will continue to plummet is down.
Sykes, who appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday, admitted it’s “easy” to dismiss Trump as a “narcissistic clown,” but said it’s “hard to underestimate the impact he’s having on our political had standards”.
“You’re looking at an all-out assault, not just on the culture of fact that we had in 2016, but now on all the institutions of our constitutional republic,” he continued, noting how Trump’s rival 2024 Republican nominee is also now sowing distrust.
“It is absolutely certain that Donald Trump will continue to issue threats and insults,” said Sykes, founder of news network The Bulwark. “Anything that happens now is going to get worse, and the Republican Party and the Evangelical Church will go along with it.”
“This is of long-term importance. When things like that are broken, it’s difficult to put them back together,” he added.
Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough agreed.
“If Republicans keep that mindset and continue to support Donald Trump, they need not fool themselves,” he said. “A second Trump administration would destroy the Justice Department, would destroy the FBI, would destroy the rule of law of the federal government, would destroy the independence of the judiciary. It would destroy the third branch of American government, it would rip apart Madisonian democracy.”
“They need to understand what they’re doing, and maybe they’re doing it,” Scarborough added. “I’m just trying to figure out what’s so important about this former reality TV host that they’re willing to literally throw out Madison democracy to defend him.”
