Constance Wu has said she attempted suicide after suffering backlash over her comments about the renewal of her TV series Fresh Off The Boat.
In a statement about her return to Twitter after nearly three years, the American actress said she was “terrified of going back to social media because it almost cost me my life.”
She added, “Three years ago, when I made sloppy tweets about my TV show being renewed, it sparked outrage and internet shaming that got pretty violent.”
The Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers star, who turned 40 in March, released a series of tweets in 2019 after comedy series Fresh Off The Boat was picked up for a sixth season by US television network ABC.
While her peers shared her joy, Wu, who has starred on the show since 2015, tweeted, “So upset right now I’m literally crying. Pooh. F***.”
When a user congratulated her on the renewal, calling it “great news,” Wu replied, “No, it’s not.”
She later clarified that her comments “came after a rough day” and were “out of time,” and that the show’s extension meant she couldn’t pursue a passion project.
In her statement on Thursday, Wu addressed those comments, saying, “I felt terrible about what I had said and when a couple of DMs from another Asian actress told me I was becoming a nuisance to the Asian-American community I started to feel like I didn’t even deserve to live anymore.
“That I was a disgrace to AsAms and they would be better off without me. Looking back, it’s surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my own life, but that’s exactly what happened. Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the emergency room.”

Wu said she has written a book called Making A Scene about her experience and wants to help others who have gone through similar things.
To conclude her statement, Wu said that “after a little break from Hollywood and a lot of therapy,” she feels “ok enough” to return to social media.
“And while I’m scared, I’ve decided that I owe it to my self from three years ago to be brave and share my story so it can help someone with theirs,” she added.
Wu also shared a link to the US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline with her Twitter followers.
Fresh Off The Boat premiered in 2015 and is loosely based on Chef Eddie Huang’s book of the same name.
