Consultants can get €275,000 per year to work full-time in public hospitals

Hospital consultants may be offered salaries in the region of €275,000 per year in order to attract them to full-time positions in public hospitals.

The long-delayed new independent doctor contract is the key to shortening waiting times for patients and filling vacancies. The stop-start talks have entered an intense phase in recent weeks and there is hope that a solution can be found before the end of the year.

According to the contract, hospital consultants would agree to work full-time in a public hospital.

They could still practice privately on their own time and it would have to take place in private hospitals.

This would mean that private practice in public hospitals would be phased out, although this would take many years.

Consultants who currently have contracts that allow them to practice in a public hospital or off-site in a private hospital will be invited to apply for the new contract.
