Conversations with friends: where, when and how to watch on TV

The highly anticipated TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s first novel, Conversations with Friends, will air next week.

t builds on the success of the series normal people – a revision of her second novel – in 2020 that made Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones household names.

When will it air?

The 12-part series premieres this Sunday on BBC Three and subscription streaming service Hulu.

Irish viewers will be behind with the drama as it will not be shown on RTÉ One until Wednesday 18 May.

BBC Three isn’t yet available on Sky for Irish customers unless you manually add it to your channels (see how to do that below).

How long are episodes?

Each episode lasts approximately 30 minutes and follows the same duration as an episode of normal people.

What is the series about?

As normal peoplewhich was one of the biggest TV hits of the first lockdown, conversations with friends Set in Dublin, Ireland tells the story of Irish millennials caught in a confusing romantic circle.

The coming-of-age story follows best friends and former lovers Frances and Bobbi as they perform poetry together.

During the series, the two develop a close bond with an elderly couple, Melissa and Nick. This meeting poses a threat to the couple’s friendship.

Frances and Nick find themselves in an intimate relationship, and when Bobbi defends Melissa in the situation, the two grow apart.

Who are the performers?

Newcomer Alison Oliver narrates the series and plays the role of Frances.

On the show, she has an affair with Nick Conway, played by Joe Alwyn, who is currently dating singer Taylor Swift.

Oliver is a graduate of the Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art.

The Cork actress is relatively unknown and got her big break on this series, as did Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones in normal people.

The most notable name in this cast is Jemima Kirke, who plays Melissa Conway. She is best known for her role as Jessa on Lena Dunham’s hit HBO series girlas well as her appearance in the final season of sex education as Headmistress Haddon.

Sasha Lane plays the role of Bobbi, Frances’ girlfriend and ex-girlfriend.

Background of conversations with friends

This was Irish writer Sally Rooney’s very first novel, published in 2017 when the author was only 26 years old.

However, the first adaptation of her work was critically acclaimed normal people.

Lenny Abrahamson and co-author Alice Birch, both of whom have contributed normal peoplehave returned for conversations with friends.

when was it filmed

Filming on the drama began in April 2021. It was filmed at various locations in Ireland and abroad, with the cast most often spotted on the set in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Is there a trailer

The first official trailer for conversations with friends was released by BBC Three and gave fans a glimpse of the romantic tension building between Frances and Nick. See below.

How to add BBC Three to your Sky channels

Sky Q customers can add the channel manually by going to settings and then scrolling down to manual channel search.

You’ll see “Add a channel” and then enter the following:

Frequency: 10,847

Polarization: V

Symbol: 23.0

FEC: ¾

· Default: DVB-S2

· Modulation Scheme: 8PSK

You can then find BBC Three in the list and select “Save Station”.

To watch BBC Three, visit the manual channel search menu and select the channel from the list.

Sky+ customers follow a similar process by accessing ‘Options’ from the sub-menu, selecting ‘Add Channels’ and typing:

Frequency: 10,847

Polarization: V

· Symbol rate: 23.0

FEC: ¾

Once you have completed this, you can find BBC Three in the list and press “Select” to save.
