The car crashed into Kennedy Quay in Cork this evening and reportedly had two children inside when it sank into the water, with horrified witnesses saying one person was still trapped

A car carrying three occupants, including two children, has plunged into a river and witnesses watched in horror as it sank.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the serious incident at Kennedy Quay in Cork tonight.

It is believed that two of the three passengers were children and the third, the driver, is still trapped underwater.

It is currently believed that divers are searching for the driver and anyone else who was in the car at the fateful moment when it plunged into the water.

A major search and rescue operation is underway after a vehicle crashed into the quay involving Cork City Gardai, ambulance and fire brigade.

Eyewitnesses to the terrible incident could only watch as the car sped into the river. Cork Live reports.

They said two passengers, the children, were able to get out of the car as it sank deeper into the water and swam to safety. They have since been taken to the hospital.

However, it is feared that another passenger, the driver, was trapped in the car.

Her condition is unknown but the first reports of the incident surfaced before 9pm this evening.







Divers are currently trying to rescue the driver and anyone else who remained in the car, it is believed

Rescue services are taking care of the two escaped passengers and have launched a search operation for the third.

Video from the scene showed a helicopter hovering overhead while rescue vehicles rushed to the quayside.

The incident is believed to have happened before 9 p.m. tonight.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened at Cork Quay in recent years.

Both last year and last year there were similar incidents in which a car drove into the water.

Both times a body was then pulled out of the water.
