The exclusive Sunday Mirror picture shows Coronation Street star Simon Gregson being approached by police officers after collapsing in a Toby Carvery pub opposite the Grand National racecourse
Coronation Street star Simon Gregson was questioned in the back of a police van after a bust at a Toby Carvery pub opposite Grand National racecourse.
Our exclusive picture shows the actor being approached by officials after enjoying hospitality with fellow celebrities at Aintree Ladies Day on Friday. He was photographed earlier in the day sipping Guinness in one of the luxury suites at the famous golf course.
The incident came just days after it was revealed that 47-year-old Gregson was reportedly asked to leave a club on co-star Alexandra Mardell’s farewell, as he took off his shirt and danced on furniture, berating staff.
Police confirmed yesterday that they are investigating a reported “argument” between two men at The Rocking Horse, a Toby carvery, on Friday night.
A source told us: “There was a collapse and bouncers threw him out – they pinned him to the ground before the police arrived. He was taken to the police car and talked to for a while. It was all very chaotic.”
Hours earlier, the popular star – who earns £150,000 a year with Steve McDonald on the ITV soap opera – happily posed for photos with Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, 40, and her ex-England rugby captain Mike, 43, during his day out . at the races
Gregson also looked delighted as he rubbed shoulders with ex-footballer Dion Dublin, 52, comedian Jason Manford, 40, and Olympic heptathlete Kelly Sotherton, 45. Roast dishes with unlimited side dishes for £7.49.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that Merseyside Police were present at the Rocking Horse pub on Grand National Avenue in Aintree.
“Around 9.20pm we received a report of two men involved in an altercation in the pub. No injuries were reported and the victim declined to make a formal complaint to the police. The investigations are ongoing.”
Gregson, who grew up in Stockport, first joined the Corrie in 1989.
He has played hapless cab boss Steve for three decades and won a string of gongs. He is said to be worth an estimated £1million.
He has previously revealed how the pressure of being catapulted to stardom as a teenager on the ITV soap opera led him to turn to alcohol and drugs.
He said benders in the ’90s pissed him off, he routinely showed up late for filming — or didn’t show up at all. Speaking to the Mirror in 2014, he recalled: “Me and my mates would get dangerously drunk. We were really stupid. I’ve gone totally wild. I would pay for everyone to stay in hotel suites.
“I would have a bottle of Scotch at 4 or 5 in the morning after the pub. I spent my entire salary on going out or on cars.
“Sometimes I was two hours late for work. Other times I wasn’t there at all. I didn’t take it seriously and didn’t want to be there.
“I hated being famous. I’m not proud of my behavior but being drunk was a way of forgetting.”
He added: “Cocaine use went hand in hand with alcohol abuse. I started smoking marijuana first.”
“The reality wasn’t too big, so this alternate reality with the use of substances was a better place. In the beginning it was an experiment and I could afford it.”
Admitting that he “drinks to forget,” the star received an alcohol ban in 2007, adding, “I didn’t like being famous. I didn’t like what happened next.” In January 2020, he shocked fans by promising to keep drinking despite previous fights.
He wrote online: “I have now made my decision after years of drinking and fooling myself
of myself plus of course the health ramifications of such debauchery, I will continue.
And four months later he released an explosive-filled tirade in defense of Dominic Cummings for breaking lockdown rules – later revealing he had been intoxicated at the time.
“Well sober I have no idea what I was drunk on,” he tweeted. “Time to maybe get away from the phone.”
Fans surmised that Simon was “still drunk” during a disheveled television appearance following last year’s I’m A Celeb finale, where he finished second.
The soap star looked away from the camera and shouted “weirdos” and “love you” while answering questions from This Morning presenters Vernon Kay and Josie Gibson.
He has been married to former Hollyoaks actress Emma Gleave, 38, since 2010 and the couple have three sons together.
In an Instagram post marking their 10th wedding anniversary, she admitted there have been difficult times in their relationship.
She wrote: “A journey full of great highs, great lows and everything in between! We keep getting up even though Si.”
Simon Gregson has been contacted for comment.
