Anne Heche died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, the Los Angeles County Coroner said.
The death of the Hollywood actress was classified as an accident, according to a US media report by a coroner.
It comes after she was “peacefully taken off life support” on Sunday, nine days after the car crash that left her with a “severe anoxic brain injury”.
Heche’s vehicle collided with an apartment building in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles and was “devoured by flames.”
The report also reportedly cited a “fractured sternum from blunt trauma” as another “significant condition” that contributed to her death.
After the crash, Heche was ruled “legally dead under California law” but remained on life support in case her organs could be donated.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced earlier Sunday that it had completed its investigation into Heche’s fatal car accident.
“As of today, no further investigative efforts are being made in this case,” police said in a statement.
Announcing her death, Heche’s family shared a statement with PA praising her “extraordinary talent” and “generous spirit”.

“She made it her life’s mission to spread kindness and joy — specifically, moving the needle to accept who you love,” the statement said.
“She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and will be greatly missed for her light.”
Heche dated US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000.
Posting on her social media after Heche was pronounced legally dead, DeGeneres, 64, wrote, “This is a sad day.
“I send all my love to Anne’s children, family and friends.”
