Corrie’s brother and sister acting duo Rebecca Ryan and Jack James Ryan make no secret of their close relationship, sharing touching social media posts about himself, Jack describing his sister as an angel “literally” and Rebecca admits working with him was a “dream come true”.

But when Rebecca took on the role of scheming Lydia Chambers in December, no one on the cast or crew knew she was related to Jack, 25, who joined earlier last year as a drug lord Jacob Hay.

Rebecca, 30, said: “Nobody on Coronation Street had an opinion. When I joined, I would talk to people and say, ‘Oh, yeah, my brother works here’. And they’ll say, ‘Really, who’s your brother? What? Jack! ‘.

“It was a dream come true to be working on the show at the same time, but it was a complete coincidence.”

Rebecca, whose character Lydia is out to destroy her ex-boyfriend Adam Barlow for the trauma he caused during their college days, can’t hide her pride in her younger brother Jack.

And she has more reasons to keep her arms around him, like five years ago, at the age of 20, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

“It definitely brought us closer together,” says Rebecca. I will die for my brother. We are best friends and it has been since we were kids. We talk on the phone at least once a day and I feel very protective of him. I was by his side for all of his hospital appointments, but I felt so helpless.”

Jack, a drama school student when the tumor was found, had surgery in 2017 and made a full recovery. He wrote a play, Me & My Left Ball, about his experiences.

Rebecca said: “I am a very emotional person. I cry because of the hype, I cry when I’m happy, when I’m sad and when I’m hungry, but this is weird. I cried, but at the same time felt it wasn’t real.

“I couldn’t handle it. I kept thinking, ‘It’s okay, it’s not happening. Everything will be fine’. That’s how I got through it and luckily he’s okay.

“Thank God he checked it out for himself and discovered the tumor and quickly looked into it. The NHS took him straight in and he had surgery.

“I cannot stress how important it is to examine yourself and if you find anything, review it immediately.”

Rebecca and Jack’s brother Charlie, 34, were the first in their family to appear on TV, landing a role in BBC One’s State of Play at the age of 14. Rebecca said: “They said that They didn’t choose him a sister, and he said, ‘Oh, I have a sister’. That’s how I started. ”

Paul Abbott, who wrote State of Play, went on to create Shameless, about the dysfunctional Gallagher clan, and Rebecca took on the role of Debbie, Frank and Monica’s daughter.

The show has a bit of sex, swearing, drugs, and violence. Rebecca, who was 11 years old when she got the role, said: “At first, my mom read the script and said, ‘Oh my God, this is a bit too much. But as she read on, she realized there was humor in it. It was a lovely family atmosphere, and when I was young, everyone took care of me.”

Rebecca grew up in Prestwich, Gtr Manchester, with her mother Maranna, a psychiatric nurse, Charlie and Jack.

Maranna grew up in Northern Ireland and was the first Irish World Dance Champion. Rebecca followed in her footsteps, starting to dance at the age of three.

She participated in competitions all over the country, and as a result finished third in the world. “I absolutely loved it,” she said, “but I got into acting and dancing then had to step back.”

After six years on Shameless, Rebecca quit and had roles in Waterloo Road and Casualty, before joining Corrie. Viewers witnessed her character Lydia destroy Adam’s marriage, by falsifying evidence to convince his wife Sarah that she was having an affair with him.

Her plan worked and Adam lost his wife, house, and job.

Rebecca said it was a dream come true to play the role of Corrie

When Sarah filed for divorce, a desperate Adam met Lydia at a coffee shop to try to reason with her. As they argued, Lydia criticized Adam for the way he treated her in college and, in a fit of rage, slapped him, before hurling him a hard slap.

Losing his balance, Adam dashed over the balcony railing of the mall to the lower floor.

Later, at the hospital, doctors told his family he had bleeding behind his eye and needed surgery to save his vision.

Rebecca said: “Lydia took it too far, but I understand why. She didn’t do this because she was a terrible person, she did it out of the deep pain Adam caused her. She wanted him to realize what he had put her through.”

Lydia is proving herself to be the hateful villain, but Rebecca outshines them all in her efforts. She said: “Many people say that Lydia is horrible and horrible – but I can separate myself from Lydia. I didn’t read it all, because I think it might make you feel bad and bad.

“I mostly consider it a good thing – people only comment because they are so invested in the plot.”

Jack still lives at the family home, but Rebecca has her own place nearby, where she lives with fiancé Dan, a pilot, whom she met in college when she was 16.

She said: “He sat next to me as Coronation Street was walking and said, ‘Oh my God, Becca, you’re horrible. I said, ‘I know, but that’s not me’. I’m the opposite of Lydia. I am the most comfortable. I try to let things go.”

Looking to the future, Rebecca dreams of appearing in a historical drama. “Something like Downton Abbey or Bridgerton or Sense and Sensibility,” she said. But for now she’s more fun than causing chaos on cobblestones.

She said: “If you had told my mother when we were growing up that all three of her children were going to be actors, she would have said, ‘Please give someone more than just earning. a normal job okay’. But she’s 100% supportive, she’s our Number One fan. ”

Coronation Road airs on ITV at 8pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
