Corrie: Abi Franklin faces baby shock in the teaser trailer

It’s been four years since Sally Carman joined the cast of Coronation Street as mechanic Abi Franklin – and she’s made a huge impression on viewers of the soap opera.

The character was introduced as the mother of teenager Seb Franklin – played by Harry Visinoni, 22, but Sally has become a big part of the show herself.

The actress has impressed viewers and critics alike by being the focus of a number of gripping storylines, including the hate crime in which her son Seb and his girlfriend Nina Lucas – played by Mollie Gallagher, 24 – were attacked by a group of teenagers.

And while viewers are used to seeing Sally, 40, on the show every week, they probably don’t know that much about her off-screen life.

education

Sally grew up in Mexborough, South Yorkshire and was raised by her parents Steve and Ann Carman, a miner and a nursing home worker respectively.

She described her mother as “beautiful inside and out” in a social media post last year, calling her father her “anchor” and “hero.”

Throughout her childhood, the family are said to have followed Coronation Street religiously – which gave her ambitions of one day working on the ITV soap opera herself.

She later pursued an acting career and after some troubles with poor attendance at a performing arts college, she secured a place at the prestigious drama school LAMDA.

Career

Sally made her TV debut in the 1998 police trial drama City Central. She then landed roles on long-running shows including Doctors, Heartbeat, and Holby City.

Her big break, however, came as prostitute Kelly Maguire in Shameless. The character was introduced in 2005 and stayed on the show until its final season in 2013.

The character’s storylines in the Channel 4 series involved tensions with her future husband’s family early in the relationship and later a phantom pregnancy.

In the role, Sally took part in several raunchy sex scenes while being part of the comedy-drama series, including with husband Nicky Evans, 42, who played Shane Maguire.

In 2017, she made her screen debut in Coronation Street, initially introducing her character Abi as a drug addict and estranged mother to Seb.

Abi later got clean and worked on her relationship with her son – before his death. She is currently married to Kevin Webster, played by Michael Le Vell, 57.

However, their relationship was recently rocked when he found out about a one night stand she had behind his back. She has since given birth to a baby boy named Alfie.

Abi didn’t know she was pregnant and has yet to reveal to her now ex Kevin that the father is in fact Imran Habeeb, played by Charlie de Melo, 31.

romance

While her character is romantically in the middle of a complicated situation, the same cannot be said of Sally off-screen – who is in a relationship with Joe Duttine, 51.

He plays Tim Metcalfe in the ITV soap and interestingly both had appeared in Shameless – although he played Cameron Donnelly in the comedy-drama series.

The couple started dating in 2018 and moved in together the following year. They got engaged in 2020 and plan to get married around Christmas this year.

Speaking about their relationship last year, Sally teased what it’s like working with her fiancé on the set of Coronation Street. She commented, “I hate working with him.”

The actor explained, “He’s a lousy man to work with because he makes me laugh to the point where I get this sweaty feeling because I can’t contain myself.”

Stunning home

Sally and Joe – who have two children from a previous relationship – moved in together nearly three years ago after she showed off parts of their home on social media.

She posted a photo of her dining area on Instagram last year, showing a table setting with tea lights and a candle. Elsewhere in the room was a cupboard and two chairs.

The actress recently shared a glimpse into a living room on the platform as she thanked an artist for her “beautiful” oil paintings. The photo centered on a chair.

And she previously showed off the couple’s bathroom a few months ago as she thanked a cleaning company. The photo showed a shiny old-fashioned bathtub.

religion

Sally previously revealed she found her faith later in life when she was baptized at St Philip’s Church in Salford in 2019. She plans to get married there.

The soap star said she became a Christian around seven years ago after a friend “shared something with her” – at which point religion suddenly “made sense on a different level”.

Coronation Street continues on Monday nights from 8pm on ITV. You can find out more via the ITV Hub.
