Coronation Street’s Gemma Winter hoists the flag for Manchester at Pride

Since joining the cast of Coronation Street in 2014, Dolly-Rose Campbell has become one of the nation’s most recognizable soap stars.

Originally only signed for a passing role on the ITV soap, the actress is now a steady face on the cobbles as Gemma Winter – raising quadruplets alongside longtime character Chesney Brown.

Thanks to the hard-hitting storylines of her on-screen character – who morphs from ex-criminal to doting mother – Dolly-Rose has been widely acclaimed for her portrayal of the loudmouth barmaid.

The 34-year-old actress has twice been named the funniest woman in the soap world for her performance on the ITV soap – and picked up two awards during the 2017 awards season.

Away from the fictional town of Weatherfield, Dolly-Rose has a simpler and more understated image than her on-screen alter ego.

Gemma is often filmed wearing bright makeup with pink lipstick and blue eyeshadow, while her bleached blonde hair is often teased into playful hairstyles, either in a bun, bouquets or a high ponytail.

The Rovers Return barmaid then completes her iconic look with large hoop earrings.

Off-camera, Dolly-Rose prefers a more natural look — she often wears her locks loose and wears minimal makeup.

At the 2019 Diva Awards, the soap star eschewed gowns and glittery dresses for the star-studded event – instead donning a chic black suit and a low-cut lace bodice.

That same year, Dolly-Rose revealed she was bisexual and explained how Manchester Pride helped her come out publicly.

Speak with The day starshe said: “I’ve been getting proud for over a decade now. The love and acceptance that the people of Manchester show has allowed me to embrace my bisexuality and be proud of who I am.”

The actress then praised Manchester Pride, saying: “The work Manchester Pride does throughout the year to engage with and create opportunities for people in Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and beyond makes a huge difference in life so many people.”

Dolly-Rose went on to explain how in her role as an ambassador for the annual LGBTQ+ event, she wants to focus on helping others come to terms with their sexuality. In her own life, according to the Daily Star, she has had support from her nearest and dearest with her sexuality.

“I’ve always had the support of my friends and family — for people who are struggling, I would always say that people who don’t mind don’t matter, people who don’t care,” the Corrie star added added to their candid discussion with the publication.

Speaking about her role in a Manchester Pride advert earlier this year, the actress told it Manchester evening news : “It was an honor to do the voiceover for this video.

“Manchester Pride is one of my favorite times of the year in Manchester. It is a time when everyone comes together to show that love and kindness will always triumph over hate and prejudice.”
