Coronation Road: Kel Allen in Laura’s Final Scenes

Holding back tears as he lay on his hospital bed, Coronation Street’s Kel Allen could barely meet his co-star’s eyes.

Trying to prepare for some of the most heart-pounding scenes of her career, she succeeded before the cameras started filming her final moments on the cobblestones as Laura Neelan.

Viewers will get to see her final episode tonight as Laura battles cancer – with the secret murder of Weatherfield’s lovable bad boy Gary Windass, played by Mikey North, at risk of appearing. presently.

Kel, 38, said: “Me and Mikey are both emotional scraps. It was my last day so it was a lot anyway, and after that everything in these scenes is so emotional.

Laura is dying of cancer

“Normally, we laugh on set but that day we couldn’t look at each other because every time we started crying. We said, ‘Someone has to put these cameras on us and start filming because we can’t hold out much longer’.

“So is the production team, everyone is frustrated with what’s going on. Those are emotional scenes – you definitely need tissues on a day like that. ”

Corrie fans have watched for weeks as Laura, mother of troubled teenage Kelly, grows increasingly ill after being diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer.

After years of bad parenting – as well as some golden moments of Corrie’s classic comedy – the hopeless mother took steps to atone by taking the blame for the murder of her evil ex. her role as Rick so that his real killer Gary can care for Kelly (Millie Gibson) after Laura’s death.

Kel Allen is coming out of ITV soap tomorrow night

Tomorrow’s episode will see the dying mother desperate to say one last goodbye to her daughter.

Kel, who grew up in Wigan, says: “As an actor, you have to be able to go to dark places to shoot those scenes and sometimes it’s hard to put the lid on when you’re done for the day.

“If you shoot eight or nine scenes a day, you will cry for hours. It can be really exhausting. ”

But after experiencing the loss of her own life, she says Corrie’s writers had a moderate tone, balancing tears with laughter – including a raging afternoon in Rovers with Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove, when she should have been resting.

“We lost my grandmother Mildred not too long ago,” explains Kel. It is bowel cancer. In her final days, we all gathered together as a family and we had a big party with her to celebrate her life.

“She has family around her talking, singing, just the way she’s always liked it.

“We had Gary Barlow play – she loves Gary Barlow – and again we found humor and lightness in it all.

“Going through it all I have with this storyline takes you back to those times, and I think the balance in the way we did that makes it true for everyone.

Laura and daughter Kelly have a good relationship

“When this plot was introduced to me, I thought, ‘I have to take it.

“To put all of that together, the comedy has Laura getting drunk with Bernie, and you put it in the middle of something so tragic when this young woman loses her life. It is very powerful. “

Sadly, Kel’s grandmother, who loves soap, didn’t live to see her granddaughter Laura.

But she said, “If my grandmother were still here, she would love it. She is a fan of Coronation Road.

“Back when we didn’t have pauses or rewinds, my grandmother would have a house with 15 grandchildren and we would all play.

In the past, Laura and Gary never saw each other

“When Corrie’s theme tune plays, people will crowd around the phone. I know how much she loves it. She was as proud as a punch. “

Bringing her much-loved Wigan voice into prime time is a standout achievement for Kel.

“I tend to like it a little more for Laura,” she laughs. “I’d like to make it a bit stronger if at all. I think it works. ”

Kel, who made a brief appearance on the soap in 2018 as strip club manager Lulu Lockett and plays a high-profile escort in Emmerdale, is looking forward to her next challenge that.

She said, “I have auditions and I want to do reality dramas. Something to make my teeth in. But I never said never go to a certain theater and I like a song, a bit of musical theater, so who knows? ”
