Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford writes in the Mirror about why we urgently need a Labor government in Westminster – a government that genuinely understands the cost of living crisis and is determined to mobilize the help people need
Our focus in Wales has always been to help families with the everyday expenses they face.
Since decentralization, we have introduced a number of universal programs – from free recipes to free breakfast for elementary school students to free school meals, which we will extend to all elementary school children starting in September.
And we help hundreds of thousands of people pay their council tax bills and tens of thousands of small businesses pay their bills.
But the cost of living crisis is unprecedented.
The prices for everyday necessities are increasing every day. With a further increase in the upper limit for energy prices in October, things will become more difficult.
We’ve announced extra help for those on prepayment meters and those not taking gas off the grid, as well as a £200 winter fuel payment.
We’ve provided additional support for unpaid caregivers, increased the People’s Emergency Grants fund, and starting next month, young people leaving care will receive a basic income.
This is a cost of living crisis that has its roots in Tory governments that have slashed public spending, slashed welfare payments and failed to invest in energy security.
It is the UK Government that can make a real difference.

The Chancellor eventually changed his mind about a windfall tax on energy gains. But for many families, its latest package only just restores last year’s Universal Credit cuts.
We need to see more action so that benefits match runaway inflation and there is a lower energy price cap for lower income households.
And we urgently need a Labor Government in Westminster working hand in hand with a Labor Government in Wales.
A government that truly understands the cost of living crisis and is determined to mobilize the help people need.
