AIRLINE staff at an Israeli airport were shocked when a couple decided to leave their baby at a check-in desk after a disagreement over having to buy a separate ticket for their child.
The incident happened Tuesday at the Ryanair counter at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, the airline confirmed. A local news outlet said the couple were traveling to Brussels on Belgian passports when they realized they had to pay extra for a seat for their baby.
Airline staff told local press that they simply left their child in the stroller at the counter and went to passport control.
A Ryanair employee told local news source K12: “We’ve never seen anything like it. We couldn’t believe what we saw.”
According to Israel Airports Authority, the couple were late for their flight to Brussels and appeared anxious to get through airport security – with or without the baby.
A Ryanair spokesman said: “These passengers, traveling from Tel Aviv to Brussels, presented themselves at check-in without a booking for their infant. They then proceeded to security and left the child at check-in.
“The check-in clerk contacted airport security who collected these passengers and this is now a matter for local police.”
In October, a 62-year-old grandfather was arrested in Florida after it was discovered he left a child of almost two in the back seat of a locked rental car at Daytona Airport.
In 2019, a Saudia Arabian plane was forced to turn back after a mother abandoned her baby at the airport. The Saudia flight to Kuala Lumpur departed from Jeddah – but the pilot asked to turn back after a passenger told the crew she had left her baby in the terminal’s boarding area.
