A heartbroken couple who buried the remains of their beloved cat after being “hit by a car” were stunned when their real pet turned up the next day.

Danielle and Sam Smith were contacted by a neighbor on May 14 after they found a deceased black and white cat, believing it to be the couple’s 11-month-old pet Lucky.

Sam, 31, went to identify the cat – who had almost identical markings to Lucky’s – and brought the dead animal home to his partner, who broke down in tears.

Retail worker Danielle, 30, cradled the cat while landscaper Sam dug a grave in her garden to bury the moggy next to a headstone that read ‘RIP Lucky’.

But the next day, mum-of-three Danielle received a text while she was at work that included a picture of her real cat walking through the front door of her home and eating his breakfast – meaning she and her partner did buried by someone else’s cat.

Danielle, from Birmingham, said: “The whole situation is hilarious and shameful because we were all so desperate. I still can’t deal with it. It was a traumatic weekend.

“A mom on a school moms group chat messaged asking if anyone knew of a black and white cat, quite large.

“My cat is quite naughty, he tries to get into people’s houses, so I texted back and said, ‘Me, what’s he up to?’ and sent her a picture of Lucky but I didn’t hear from her so I tried calling her a couple of times.

“I was panicking because she went silent, so I thought something had happened. I was about to get in the shower when she called and said ‘I’m not sure if it’s your cat from the picture you sent me’ but it wasn’t a very good picture because he was on his side lay.

“I asked if the cat was ok and she said she was gone so I asked if I could send my partner over because it was just down the road. He shot up on his balance bike. I was upset but I was in disbelief, I thought it wasn’t Lucky.

“I was in the shower and he came into the bathroom, looked me in the eye and said, ‘It’s lucky.’ I collapsed and fell.

“Sam said I don’t need to see him but I needed to see him for my own graduation. It was so dramatic. I couldn’t control it. You are part of the family. Potato sack, my partner tried to stop me from looking.

“I yelled, spat and dribbled, pushed him away and said I have to see him like I’m in a movie.

“We opened the sack so you could see the neck down, the cat’s body and markings were exactly the same.”

The mother had gone to work the next day and explained what had happened to her manager so they would know why she was so emotional, but by 10:30 a.m. she had a text confirming Lucky was alive.

Danielle burst into tears of happiness at first, but then reality dawned on her when she realized she and Sam had buried a completely different cat.

She added: “Around 10.30am I got a Snapchat and there was my Lucky eating his food and lying in my bed cleaning himself.

“I burst into tears of happiness, but at the same time I thought, ‘What cat’s blood did I have on my hands’ and whose cat was I mourning.

“When Sam was digging the grave he put a stone on it that said ‘RIP Lucky’. It was a full grave. It’s such a funny situation. Everyone said it was just me and Sam. If it had to happen to anyone, it’s us.”

Since then, the couple have been able to track down the deceased cat’s owner, who asked them to leave Moggy where they buried him so he can rest.

Danielle explained: “She posted a photo of her cat on Facebook so I texted her saying I think her cat is buried in my garden. I explained to her what happened and she was so lovely.

“I know it sounds weird but I asked her if she’d like us to dig it up so she can bury it or cremate it. She said let him rest if that’s ok, so we planted some seeds there.

“I’m relieved, but I still get upset when I relive the situation. I’m so happy the cat is back because we’ve had her literally since the day she was born.”
