Bettors will be delighted that pubs, nightclubs and restaurants will all return to normal.

Chief Health Officer Tony Holohan wrote a letter to the Government this evening confirming NPHET’s recommendations for easing restrictions.

Following today’s meeting, NPHET has advised that hospitality can return to normal while crowds will no longer be restricted to sporting events and other venues.

And Covid certificates will no longer be needed to enter bars and restaurants.

In the letter, Holohan said: “There is no longer a continuing public health rationale for the majority of the public health measures currently in place.”

It is believed that the increased use of booster vaccines was one of the main reasons behind this decision, as well as the decrease in the number of positive cases.

Some restrictions will still apply – such as wearing masks in public places like shops, buses and other public transport.

School students will also be required to wear masks in class.

A Covid card will be required for international travel, and those who test positive will still have to self-isolate.

It looks like there will be a period of return to office work, and the Government will reveal the date for this today.

Taoiseach Michael Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varaskar and the Cabinet Committee will meet today to decide on a schedule for lifting restrictions, before a National Speech at 6pm.

Responding to tonight’s recommendations Donall O’Keeffe, Executive Director of the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) said: “The news coming from NPHET tonight has been heard by the entire hospitality and services sector. late-night eaters eagerly waiting for a long time.

“It is hoped that the Government will now act quickly and there will be no delays towards the full reopening and removal of restrictions on visitors.

“The hotel service is ready and waiting to open this weekend. If the Government gives the green light then the recovery of the hotel and nighttime sectors could start as early as Friday night. “

Than to follow.
