Cowen: Everything depends on the quality of the energy grants for our farmers

Whether Fianna Fáil accepts the new plans to cut carbon emissions will depend heavily on the details of the energy subsidy schemes for farmers, said former Agriculture Secretary Barry Cowen.

r Cowen said he was surprised that more detailed energy plans that could be made available to farmers were not being worked on given the long time it had taken to reach an agreement.

He said he and other key Fianna Fáil members were still awaiting details of those plans and that it was crucial to accepting or rejecting the coalition plan in rural Ireland agreed by the three governing party leaders.

“I am frankly surprised that no further details were available given the time spent on this subject,” Mr Cowen said Irish Independent.

Another harsh critic of Fianna Fáil’s proposals last week, Willie O’Dea, said he believed the plans had a chance of acceptance – provided credible farm energy production subsidy programs and other issues were forthcoming.

“There were no winners and if both sides of the argument, environment and agriculture, seem unhappy, there is a chance for acceptance,” he said.

The Farmers Union of Ireland will begin briefing members online on Wednesday evening. But their officials are also struggling to provide the details of what has so far been limited to headline emissions cut figures for various sectors.

The driving force behind last Thursday’s compromise, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, reiterated yesterday that the outcome will help rural Ireland prosper in the medium to long term.

writing in Sunday independenthe said the package had the support of the masses of Irish people who wanted a future for their children.

The Environment Minister argued that the current farming system is already failing many farmers who are currently unable to earn a decent living.
