Crawley MP Henry Smith urges Liz Truss to prioritize the airline industry

A SUSSEX MP has led a campaign urging the new Prime Minister to make further support for Britain’s struggling airline industry a priority for the new government.

Henry Smith has led a cross-party group of parliamentarians in a letter to Liz Truss, urging the new government to support UK aviation, travel and tourism as they continue to recover from the effects of Covid-19.

The letter, which Mr Smith organized as chair of the all-party parliamentary group on the future of aviation, urges the new prime minister to support the sector to help it navigate the current challenges and spur on its recovery.

The MP for Crawley, whose constituency is Gatwick Airport, cited the demands on the Government:

  • Give a single minister specific responsibility for overseeing the intergovernmental approach to international travel policy
  • Introduction of minimum border force staffing levels at UK airports
  • Reaffirm your commitment to the Jet Zero strategy and ensure price stability to attract investment and new entrants
  • Work with partners to create an international travel toolkit to be prepared for future crises
  • Work with industry to develop a long-term skills strategy to support jobs in aviation, travel, tourism and sustainable aviation.

The letter was signed by 55 MPs, including former Ministers Stephen Crabb and Mims Davies.

“Although our aviation, travel and tourism industries have had a good summer season, we must not be under the illusion that they have fully recovered from the impact of the past two years,” Mr Smith said.

“As an island nation, our aviation industry is one of the key drivers of our economy and a fully recovered and combat-ready industry will be vital as the new government seeks to address the challenges ahead.

“It is crucial that the Prime Minister makes supporting these industries a central part of her agenda and supports them on their path to full recovery. This includes supporting a challenging winter season, but also recommitting and redoubling our efforts to support the sector’s transition to net zero.

“Our aviation, travel and tourism industries have been among the hardest hit and among the latest to have Covid restrictions lifted. We must build on the progress made over the summer and support these industries in the coming months and years as part of a vision for a truly global Britain.

“With so many workers in Crawley dependent on the continued success of Gatwick Airport, I look forward to pursuing this with the new Prime Minister.” Crawley MP Henry Smith urges Liz Truss to prioritize the airline industry
