Ncuti Gatwa Announced As The Next Doctor Who

Fans say Ncuti Gatwa would be “fantastic” as the new Doctor Who – as they praise the BBC for casting an LGBTQ+ icon in the role.

The Scottish-Rwandan actor, who is known for his portrayal of gay character Eric in the Netflix series Sex Education, will become the 14th Time Lord.

Although Ncuti has never openly discussed his sexuality, in an interview with Attitude magazine, he said “nobody has to be ashamed of it”.

It comes after Jodie Whittaker – who made history as the first female Doctor Who – announced she was leaving the iconic show last summer.

This news was announced just before tonight’s BAFTA Awards Ceremony – where Ncuti prepares for the award for Best Comedy Performance in the field of sex education.

And fans quickly flocked to Twitter to give their opinions on the new Doctor Who appointment.

One wrote: “Ncuti is the first weirdo to play the Doctor. He is also the first actor born outside of this country to play the Doctor. This is such an inspiring choice, I’ve never been so excited for a Doctor’s original announcement!

Another tweeted: “A great enough female #DoctorWho… feels progressive and not ahead of time. But now, a black LGBTQ+ doctor? Finally, why is it taking so long? ”

The third said: “First LGBTQ+ actor to play doctor!!! Ncuti Gatwa is the new doctor!! ”

While a fourth said: “Interesting choice! It would be great to see the first black person and LGTBQ+ actor play the Doctor! I wish we had another woman but I love this casting choice1 Hope the companion is Lydia West! # Which doctor.”

Others said they can’t wait to see what 29-year-old Ncuti brings to the role.

“Great choice. He will be great. Really excited to see him as #TheDoctor,” one fan wrote.

Another commented: “Everybody who has played a doctor has brought something different, their own twist, quirks, etc that made their version of the doctor so great. I can’t wait to see what Ncuti will bring to this iconic role.”

While one fan said they were glad another Scottish actor was cast in the role after Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi.

“Ncuti Gatwhaaaaaat?! This is great news, I’m glad to know where he and Big Russ are [director] take us. Plus he’s Scottish! All the Scottish Doctors are excellent. ”

Speaking of her new role, Ncuti said in a statement: “There are no words to describe how I feel.

“A mixture of great honor, joy and of course a little fear.

“This role and program means so much to so many people around the world, myself included, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled the responsibility and privilege only that very carefully.I will do my best to do the same.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and to be able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, extremely intelligent and full of danger. A pitch-black pitch. play an actor’s metaphor.”

He added: “The entire team has been very welcoming and really put their heart into the show. And while it was difficult, I knew I was joining a truly supportive family. Unlike Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this program.”
