One employee thought the chair looked like it “belonged in a haunted house.”

A wingback chair spotted in an Oxfam store has sparked fear and amusement in equal measure, with shoppers having more than a few suspicions about its “definitely not haunted” sign.

Donated as part of a three-piece sofa and armchair set, the eye-catching piece of furniture has a certain spooky style that might not be to everyone’s taste.

The set was donated to an Oxfam branch in Liverpool and quickly left staff at odds over whether it was a great vintage look or needed some sort of instant exorcism.

As already reported by the Liverpool Echo, Manager Kira Adams thought the chair was absolutely beautiful, while assistant manager Rob had some reservations, believing it looked like it “belonged in a haunted house”.

Kira told the publication, “To reassure him, I printed a silly sign saying the suite is definitely not haunted.

“The sign has proved popular with customers and I’ve seen one or two of them take pictures of it, but I was taken aback when Rob told me he’d seen the chair on Twitter and by hundreds of thousands of people liked .”

A photo of the chair was shared by Twitter user Heather Cowan (@hwardcowan), who said wryly, “That’s definitely something a haunted chair would say…”

The tweet quickly went viral, with 1.4million people liking the “definitely unhaunted” chair pic at the time of writing.

Plenty of other Twitter users agreed that it was “definitely haunted,” despite the reassuring sign, with one person shuddering, “Chucky or Annabelle would sure pop out.”

Another joked, “The chair is honest but the matching sister chair and mother sofa are haunted as hell.”

Of course, the image sparked a slew of imaginative PhotoShop jobs, from Ghostbusters’ Slimer getting comfortable, to the “Definitely Not” part being cut out entirely.

Kira continued, “I want to reiterate that despite what anyone on Twitter might think, the chair is definitely not haunted, cursed or possessed by ghosts, specters or ghosts — I swear it.”

To put the viral attention to good use, the team is now encouraging brave members of the public to take selfies on the spooky-looking chair.

In exchange, the branch is asking for a small donation towards an emergency call for 23 million people in East Africa who are currently suffering from severe hunger after crop failures.
