Cricket drummer Jerry Allison dies aged 82

Musician Jerry Allison, who co-starred with Buddy Holly in the American rock band The Crickets, has died.

The drummer, who is credited with co-written hits including That I’ll Be the Day and Peggy Sue, died on Monday at the age of 82.

His death was announced on the official Buddy Holly Facebook page, with a statement paying homage to Allison as a “musician ahead of his time”.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jerry ‘JI’ Allison, drummer on Cricket, one of Buddy’s closest friends and an inspiration to the drummer for many years. decades since, who passed away today at the age of 82,” the statement read.

“JI was a musician ahead of his time, and certainly his energy, ideas, and exceptional skills contributed to making both The Crickets and rock n’ roll itself such a success.

“Buddy is often considered the original singer-songwriter, but JI, too, has written and inspired so many songs that will become eternal classics.”

The Crickets were founded by singer-songwriter Holly in January 1957.

Their first hit single, That I’ll Be the Day, was released in May 1957 and peaked at number three on the Billboard Top 100 that September.

The cover of their first album, The ‘Chirping’ Crickets, showed the band’s line-up at the time of Holly, Allison, Niki Sullivan and Joe B Mauldin.

Of those four, Allison was the last surviving member with Sullivan and Mauldin died in 2004 and 2017, respectively.

Holly herself died in an air crash in 1959, at the age of 22.
