Two of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s longest-serving cabinet mates have resigned.

Ishi Sunak said he would step down as chancellor shortly after the announcement of Health Minister Sajid Javid’s resignation.

Mr Sunak wrote on Twitter: “The public has a right to expect the government to be properly, competently and honestly run.

“I realize this may be my last ministerial post, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Health Secretary Boris Johnson said the British people are “right to expect integrity from their government”.

Sajid Javid wrote: “The tone you set as a leader and the values you uphold are a reflection of your peers, your party and ultimately the country.

“Conservatives at their best are seen as no-nonsense decision-makers guided by strong values. We may not have always been popular, but we were competent to act in the national interest.

“Unfortunately, in the current circumstances, the public is concluding that we are now neither.”

In a tweet, Mr Javid said: “I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

“It has been a tremendous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience.”

The resignations come as Mr Johnson denied lying to aid workers about his knowledge of the allegations against Chris Pincher.

No10 spokesmen and ministers have made a number of different statements about how Mr Johnson was informed of the situation.

Asked if he lied to her, Mr Johnson said: “No, and let me explain what happened. We are talking about a series of appointments over seven years.

“Chris Pincher came into government as Deputy Chief Whip before I became Prime Minister, he was moved to the Foreign Office, then he became Secretary of State for Housing and we then moved him back to Deputy Chief Whip.

“About two and a half years ago I got this complaint, it was something that was only very fleetingly raised with me but I wish we, myself in particular, had acted on it and he hadn’t stayed in government because at the time I’m afraid we have, as far as we can see, behaved very, very badly after the allegations we have.

“I feel sorry for those who have been severely affected by this.”

Mr Johnson said Chris Pincher should have been sacked from government after the 2019 incident in which he was investigated by the Foreign

Office.

Asked if appointing Mr Pincher to government was a mistake, the Prime Minister said: “I think it was a mistake and I apologize for that. In hindsight it was wrong.

“My apologies to everyone who has been severely affected by this. I want to be absolutely clear that there is no place in this administration for anyone who is predatory or who abuses their position of power.”

Speaking to reporters in his office in the House of Commons, he didn’t deny a joke: “Pincher by name, pincher by nature.”

He said: “What I can tell you is, if I look at the background and why I am so sorry that a complaint was made against Chris Pincher at the Foreign Office about three years ago, it cleared up that he apologized.

“I was spoken to verbally, I was informed of what had happened. If I had my time again, I would look back and realize that he would not learn a lesson and would not change, and I regret that.”

Tory MP Nick Gibb, a critic of the Prime Minister, has urged Cabinet ministers to oust Mr Johnson.

The former Schools Minister told the BBC PM programme: “I worry that the public can now trust what ministers are saying on the airwaves.”

Asked if he believed the Downing Street report on the Chris Pincher controversy, he said: “It stretches credibility.”
