Manchester United landed an important win after beating Norwich at Old Trafford on Saturday, where Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick beat the Canaries while Paul Pogba was booed
Cristiano Ronaldo was the key man for Manchester United when they needed him most following his hat-trick in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Norwich.
But while the snarling crowd at Old Trafford will only tie the 37-year-old closer to their hearts, the same cannot be said of Paul Pogba, whose career with the Red Devils is at an end. The Frenchman was booed while “f*** off Pogba” chants also rang out from inside the stadium, while a more generic “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” was addressed to a number of players.
If Pogba wasn’t sure about his plans this summer, he might have just made up his mind as the midfielder now appears to have lost the love of United faithful entirely. The 28-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season as speculation over his future has roiled for the past six years.
With United facing another rebuild this summer and with a number of players set to follow Pogba out the exit doors of Old Trafford, the club could well have a problem convincing signings given the treatment the Frenchman has endured. The fans have come to expect the world of him and when he was put in a difficult position as the only defensive midfielder against Norwich, he was brutally mauled after a perfectly reasonable performance.
His return to Old Trafford in 2016 was heralded as a defining moment for United. The club asserted themselves as a powerhouse in Europe by signing a world-class player at the peak of his powers. But in truth, that just hasn’t materialized as the Red Devils have declined sharply year after year. It would be impossible for a big-name target not to be at least a little wary of a move to Old Trafford given the path Pogba’s career has taken.
However, this could be his low point and Ralf Rangnick was far from happy with the fans booing Pogba. He said: “I didn’t hear it myself but I was informed after the game. I can totally understand that the fans are frustrated, so are we, but I don’t think they should be playing individual players. I don’t think that’s right or right.”

However, a player who returns to United will forever have the fans’ love in Ronaldo – who continues to play in a United team that is one of the worst in living memory. His incredible hat-trick reignited their top-four chase after that arsenal and Tottenham both lost.
Despite United’s best attempts to implode themselves, Ronaldo stepped forward to get them out of trouble as if to say he is determined not to play anywhere but the United States Champions League next season. There’s talk of the Portuguese superstar actually holding United back, but the simple thing is, at 21 he’s their top scorer in all one-country mile competitions. The next highest is Bruno Fernandes with nine.
The Portuguese icon has often been blamed for United’s poor performance but the fact remains he still has the ability to turn a game on its head and create something from nothing – despite being 37. Old Trafford will be his stage for as long as he wants it, despite reports Erik Ten Hag has already decided to show him the door once he takes over Rangnick.

Without Ronaldo, the interim head coach would have tried to justify why his side lost to the bottom of the table First League and Old Trafford – where fans protested the Glazers before kick-off – would have been a poisonous cauldron of hostility. And it might have been that toxic atmosphere that made Pogba the scapegoat after a reasonably decent performance.
real MadridParis Saint Germain and juventus everyone is chasing the signature of the France international, whose agent Mino Raiola is perhaps even less popular at the club. But while it would be going too far to say that these boos represent the entire fanbase, it certainly sounded like the death knell of Pogba’s United career.
