Cristiano Ronaldo asked Ralf Rangnick to change his tactics during a behind-the-scenes meeting between Manchester United superiors and temporary bosses.

Ronaldo shot out the blocks below Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he returns to Old Trafford in the summer, but with the German it is a different story.

There were concerns once appointed, the Portuguese star would not fit his famous high-pressing style of play.

And that’s what has come to fruition as Ronaldo has struggled to adapt to Rangnick’s system, only recently ending a six-match goal drought with Brighton.

Ronaldo is said to have personally gone to Rangnick to see what could be done to get the best out of him.

Athletic claim the 37-year-old attended a meeting with Rangnick following the draw with Southampton on the 12th of February when the mood around the camp was tense after three consecutive 1-1 results including FA Cup exit Middlesbrough.

Ronaldo suggested United should play two players up front so he can have an attacking partner who can support him at the end of the pitch.

Solskjaer regularly uses a 4-4-2 formation when the Norwegian plays a mixture of Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood alongside Ronaldo.

But Rangnick used it sparingly with 4-3-3 appearing to be the manager’s preference.

And that is what he has chosen since his talk with Ronaldo when Paul Pogba returned to partner Jadon Sancho showing signs of life on the wing and Rashford on the other side of Ronaldo as the No.

Ronaldo had another disappointing night at the Wanda Metropolitano against arch-nemesis Atletico Madrid.

Anthony Elanga had to rescue the Reds from the bench when his equalizer with the first touch of the game resulted in a 1-1 draw.

And Ronaldo appeared frustrated throughout the match when he complained to referee Ovidiu Hategan about the way the match was started.

United were unable to match the physicality of Diego Simeone’s men, who enhanced their game for the first 45 minutes.

Madrid presented heavy challenges but Hategan only showed a yellow card, for Marcos Llorente for a foul on Harry Maguire.

Ronaldo went down clutching his leg at one point after he was grossly fouled halfway to thwart a promising United counter-attack.

This led to an explosive outburst at half-time when Ronaldo gestured to the referee to take his card out of his pocket.
