The Crown: Imelda Staunton on Inheriting the Queen’s Role

Police are hunting for thieves who stole £150,000 worth of gems and antiques from the set of The Crown last week.

The popular Netflix series is currently filming its fifth series starring Imelda Staunton and Dominic West.

Season five will focus on the early to mid-1990s and therefore feature the very glamorous Princess Diana, who is portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki.

Diana was known for wearing stunning pieces of jewelry for public occasions, and so the crew was tasked with recreating it.

As well as gems and silverware, among the 200 crafted props was an expensive replica of the Russian Faberge Egg purchased by the Queen’s grandfather.

Along with the replica of the egg acquired by King George V in 1933, there are lampstands, jewelry, grandfather clocks and a domed birdcage.

The suspects are said to have broken into three lorries near Doncaster before filming scenes with Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce as the Queen and Prince Philip.

A source told The Sun: “The gang gained access to the trucks, ripped them apart and stripped them.

“The makers have a keen eye for detail and every piece is meticulously chosen. Losing so much is just heartbreaking.”

Antique dealers are now being urged to seek out items from the carriageway, believed to be worth around £150,000.

A TV insider added to the publication: “This couldn’t have happened at a more unpleasant time.

“Manufacturers are frantically looking for alternatives. But there are so many that are unique, it won’t be easy. “

South Yorkshire Police said: “It is reported that three vehicles containing props used in movies and TVs were broken into and some items taken away. The officers investigated. ”

Mirror has reached out to Netflix for comment. As The Sun reports, they said: “A replacement will be found and filming will not stop.”

The Crown season 5 is scheduled to air on Netflix later this year.
