Croydon incident: Riot police storm road while wanted man throws furniture out window

Police teams have evacuated members of the public at nearby flats as they deal with a man described as wanted who is throwing furniture onto Croydon’s High Street

Armed police officers got into an altercation with a wanted man who was throwing furniture out of a window overlooking a busy street in Croydon, south London.
Members of the public have been evacuated from the High Street area as riot police stand by.
Teams of about 11 officers were seen on the street as a statement confirmed they were dealing with a wanted man.
Police have been in the area since about 8 a.m.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Officers in Croydon are dealing with a wanted man.
“Officers were called to High Street Croydon near the junction with Katherine Street at 08:10am on Wednesday 1 June.

“A man suspected of being wanted by the police is said to have stayed in a building at the site.
“Officials came and a man threw pieces of furniture into the street.
“Local roads have been closed pending police action. LAS and LFB were called as a precaution.
“Some members of the public have been evacuated from their homes to ensure their safety. No reports of injuries.”

Croydon Council has urged the public to avoid the area due to the police incident.
They wrote on Twitter: “High Street, Croydon and Katharine Street are closed from the Scarbrook Road junction to the Fell Road junction due to a police incident.
“Buses will be diverted. Please avoid the area if possible.”
