Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins once shared a beautiful story about how he was inspired to write a song by his daughter Annabelle
Taylor Hawkins once wrote a song specifically for his daughter.
The Foo Fighters drummer, who tragically passed away at the age of 50, has previously spoken openly about how 13-year-old Annabelle inspired his song “Middle Child”.
The track is included on the 2019 album Get The Money, which the rocker released with his side project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, but he originally wrote something for his son Oliver Shane, 14.
But Taylor, who also shared eight-year-old daughter Everleigh with his wife Alison, said his son wasn’t exactly impressed.
He told it once Joe Daly : “I had this song for my son. It’s a sweet song. I’ve had the music for it for five or six years, but I so** didn’t have any lyrics and I didn’t have bridge and it didn’t end up on KOTA [another of his albums]. I think I already had it on the Birds of Satan record, that was in 2013 or something.
“It got to the point of possibly being on the record, so I played it to my son and he said, ‘If you put that on your record, I’ll punch you in the face!’ He was like, ‘If you write a song about me, it has to sound like Metallica! I don’t want a bullshit ass-pussy song about me dad!’”
His daughter then came to him to tell him to write a song about her instead.
Taylor continued, “At the time my daughter said, ‘You gotta have a song for me!’ I said, “Well, I don’t know. You’re the middle child and you’re acting like a middle child right now, seeking attention and approval.”
“Which I understand, because Shane and the baby are always in trouble [daughter Everleigh] damn cute, so you’re in the thick of it. But you’re like my twin, too.” She really is. So I was like, ‘Why don’t I just call the song Middle Child?’”
The song includes the lyrics: “Clean up your mess almost every night / You’ve got a guilty conscience / First there you never keep me waiting / Another perfect daddy-daughter date
“You were mad when you came home yesterday / Came up to me and I knew exactly what to say / My little twin, I’m here with you / Stay close and we’ll make it through
“How I love you, middle child / I see angels when you smile / And when I look into your eyes / I could stay with you forever / As day turns to night / As we slowly float to the sky”.
Taylor’s sudden death was announced in a statement today on the official Foo Fighters Twitter page.
It said: “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.
“His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live on in all of us forever.
“Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this unimaginably difficult time.”
According to local reports, before the band’s performance at a music festival in Bogota, Colombia, he was found dead in his hotel room, which they have since canceled.
