Equal Cyberpunk 2077 has been updated several times, mainly focusing on the improvements made to the performance of the CD Projekt REDopen-world adventure, especially on consoles, where – to be fair – it launches like a pig. But back in the Night City, I was stunned by the depth of these updates. And I’m surprised they weren’t talked about more.
I played Cyberpunk 2077 on PC, before it was released worldwide and the chaos that ensued. At the time, I thought this game was, you know, pretty cool. It’s not perfect. Its love of sledgehammer-level flair, and it’s not a GTA-quality open world (though it’s supposed to never be, comes from a studio a fraction of the size of a studio). Rockstar scale). But it’s a fun, engaging open world, with some gorgeous breakable RPG systems, rich shooting, and a branching story structure that I really found to be engaging and engaging in a way. surprising. I spent about 60 hours with it and loved it.
Then it comes to the dashboard. God, it’s coming to consoles. Those console versions are what they were, right? A mess. Launched a thousand memes. The premium PC experience besieged by some bugs, but not more than your average open-world game release, suddenly gives way to videos that compile the brutal errors of a game in its early stages. the last paragraph, when both the graphic and mechanical systems seem to crash themselves and the coding.
So CD Projekt had a job in his hand. A lot of people look silly. One of those people is me, right? I can just play the game on a high-end PC, make judgments based on that, and then a large segment of the audience has a very different experience. But they also ruined their reputation as the darling studio of gamers. Much of what The Witcher 3 has built in terms of the studio’s reputation seems to fall apart after just a few weeks.
The closest comparison I can think of is to what happened to Square Enix with Final Fantasy 14. Following a perfectly successful MMO, one of the few sane World of Warcraft rivals, it’s one disaster. In that case, Square had to reboot the entire game, starting from scratch to build something new that would rescue not only the game, but also the company’s reputation and most valuable IP. its. The result, now famous, is the biggest comeback in game history.
And, you know… I’m getting it, though light nuances, off Cyberpunk. It will never be FF14. For starters, it improves an existing game more than a full reboot – but these improvements are more than bare minimum. To put it bluntly, you could say that CD Projekt is a terrible thing. As it should be; That’s everything by the studio here.
This week, as I return to Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time since its release month, I know what to expect: technical improvements, bug fixes, and perhaps some general tweaks. What I didn’t expect was how much change beyond simply getting the game to work properly under all circumstances.
So let’s put all that aside for a second; assuming the game works on your platform of choice. With some jokes here and there, it seems to be pretty much there on all platforms. What I mean, and what impressed me the most, is that everything else changed during this patching process.
There are balance changes, such as all weapons being revamped, new weapons added, and mechanics completely retooled so you can’t completely break the game by making sure every hit which you land on is extremely important. There are quality-of-life smarts, such as showing what handmade clothes look like on your character before you craft them. Clothing in general has been revisited with their stats, abilities, and perks reorganized. Skills have been rebalanced, moved, merged, or even eliminated entirely – because why keep one that doesn’t work? Some of the most powerful network control software has been provided with new mechanisms, moves, and finalizers.
There’s just… a lot of this. Now there are separate, neat animations when you equip certain weapons for the first time. While there’s still no police car chase (and I don’t think there will be, since the game isn’t really built for it), you sometimes see police cars chasing cities. gang members on the street – and you can follow and join yourself in that battle. In fact, there are many of these dynamic events scattered around the world: NPCs are actually doing things instead of just standing around or going in circles to give the illusion of activity. A lot of this comes with new sound effects and other elements to add legitimacy to the atmosphere.
YouTuber One Dragon is doing a particularly good job of tracking the changes, noting things like how some NPCs actually do now appear to have schedules. If you visit a store during the day, it will be packed with customers, but at night there will be people sweeping the floors. The security guards, previously standing still outside, now move around and grab a seat to rest their legs.
These may sound small, but I firmly believe that in an open world game like this the little touches add up a lot. It adds a lot as the core game has always been pretty solid to start with, performance issues aside – and that’s the case with Cyberpunk 2077. The changes are numerous and they make updates. This isn’t just about repairing cracks: it’s trying to fill and perfect them properly, so the cracks are gone.
Basically, I think CD Projekt RED has a chance here. This studio could really have a shot at rescuing this game. With their larger number of recent updates, versions 1.3 and 1.5, the studio has found a good update cadence and a strong trajectory in what those patches are doing. However, we need more – and perhaps some free DLC – and then they might have a crack at actually relaunching the proper game to turn the tide.
In short, I am very impressed. This is the biggest post-launch improvement in a game I’ve seen in a very long time, and it makes me surprisingly hopeful about the future of Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s hoping this is just a step. start of work.
