Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Trailer: Lots of Flashes and Cybercrime

Netflix has released the full trailer for their upcoming animated series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.” The show is a standalone spin-off of the 2020 video game “Cyberpunk 2077.” In that game, you’ll play as the mysterious V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary whose implant is overwriting his personality with that of a dead celebrity. The game was praised for its world-building but was riddled with bugs. It is also famous for Keanu Reeves playing a character named Johnny Silverhand.

The new spin-off series comes from CD Projekt Red, who produced the video game. The setting takes place in the future in the Night City, which is rife with crime and terrorized by gang wars. We follow a street kid who must become a petty thief, or mercenary. The intro is most of safe for work, but there’s some animated nudity, so keep that in mind.

As someone who hasn’t played “Cyberpunk 2077,” I have two thoughts on this trailer. I totally get the feel of this place. The world building is clearly there and gorgeous. However, until the last seconds of the video, it was so frantic that I started getting migraines. Lots of flicker and cuts between moments, as well as lots of extreme close-ups. If you are prone to headaches from such things, you should know that. As we get to the end, I start to wonder if it’s all just bright colors and tight shots on faces, but it slows down at the end and offers a glimpse into the story. . Looks like there’s going to be a romance here, and lots of chase scenes. It has a very “Blade Runner” feel to it, it’s a wonderful world to visit. I am ready to inject this once my migraine is relieved.

This is… So much to take part in

The trailer was cut by Studio Trigger (“Little Witch Academia”), the man behind the animation here. Here is the official synopsis for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners:”

The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City – a city obsessed with technology and future body modification. Having everything to lose, he still lives by becoming an edgerunner – an outlaw mercenary also known as a cyberpunk.

We were introduced (sort of) to the team of editors for the show: David, Maine, Dorio, Kiwi, Pilar, Rebecca and Lucy “and the description under the video promises “more to come” with the logo smile emotion, so I assume there will be more people involved as the episodes go on.

As I mentioned, CD Projekt Red is producing with Rafał Jaki (“The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, “Cyberpunk 2077”) acting as host and executive producer. Satoru Homma, Bartosz Sztybor and Saya Elder will produce. Hiroyuki Imaishi (“Kill la Kill,” “Gurren Lagann”) is directing. The creative director is Hiromi Wakabayashi (“Kill la Kill”), with character design and animation direction from Yoh Yoshinari (“Little Witch Academia”), and a screenplay adaptation from Yoshiki Usa (“Promare”) and Masahiko Otsuka (“Star Wars: Visions ‘The Elder'”). Scores come from Akira Yamaoka (series “Silent Hill”).

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” will premiere on Netflix this September.
