Unlucky cyclist was hospitalized for his injuries after crashing into a barrier at high speed during a sprint to the finish line.

The crash happened at the end of the fifth stage of the Tour of Turkey. Edward Planckaert was one of those keen to push for the finish line as the leaders entered the final kilometer of the race.

The Belgian was closest to the barriers on the left side of the peloton as he drifted back and moved alongside a group of four other riders. They all stood shoulder to shoulder and got a little too close in the final sprint.

Planckaert was the unfortunate victim as a bump on the right side of the group set off a chain reaction across the riders, resulting in the Belgian being pushed into the barrier. He hit the ground hard while several other riders also got off their bikes trying to avoid him.

In a statement on social media, the Alpecin-Fenix ​​team confirmed that Planckaert had been taken to hospital for treatment. “It was an eventful day at the Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye with an unfortunate crash in preparation for the full sprint,” the team wrote.

Jasper Philipsen, another Alpecin-Fenix ​​rider who accidentally pushed Planckaert into the barrier, avoided a fall and took part in the sprint finish. He couldn’t stop Sam Welsford from passing him to take the win but crossed the finish line in second.

After the race, Philipsen accepted Twitter to explain what happened. “I’m sorry to see Edward Planckaert down like this after doing a great job,” he wrote. “I followed my lead from Lionel Taminaux and tried to create some space for Planckaert on the left. But I was pushed to the right and had nowhere to go. Hopefully he and the others who fell are ‘ok’ and recovering well.”
