The family of a man who disappeared nine days ago after going to the shops said he disappeared “without a trace”.

David Garwood, 58, who changed his last name to Stewart by deed, was last seen by his son on April 1.

He told his boy Gareth, 28, he was having trouble sleeping and was planning to go to the local shop to buy hot chocolate and biscuits. Wales Online reports.

David’s civil servant niece, Carla Saunders, 44, from Newport in Wales, said his disappearance was totally atypical.

She said: “David lived with his son and last saw him on April 1 at 5.30pm. He left and went to his girlfriend’s for the night.

“[David] later said he had trouble falling asleep and his son suggested he eat hot chocolate and cookies.

“David wouldn’t say if he would definitely go to the store. He called him back and he couldn’t reach him.”

She added: “Gareth and his girlfriend went home and he was nowhere to be seen. His phone was still there, but his jacket and keys were with him.

“The dog was free in the house and it was unusual. They called the police as David suffers from mental health issues and has done so since he was young.

“Police broke into his car and searched the vehicle, checking he was not in the trunk.

“They searched 300 meters of alleys and sheds and helicopters flew out and the Coast Guard flew out.

“Every day the police conduct their searches and bring in sniffer dogs. There’s no sign of him.

“It’s just incredible that someone can disappear and there isn’t a single CCTV footage. It really doesn’t look like him.

“No way would he go far. We fear someone may have done something to him.”

Carla said that since David is diabetic, he is prone to low blood sugar and could cause him to slip into a coma.

She said there was no sign he was going away.

“David was out paying for a rug for the living room and had his medication ready for the morning,” she added.

David’s stepson Craig, 37, was also involved in the search.

A statement from South Wales Police said: “David was reported missing from his home in West Cross and was last seen on April 1.

“He is described as 5ft 11″, of slim build, white, short wispy hair, stubble and freckles. He wears glasses and possibly a blue coat with red lining at the zip.”
