Dakota Schiffer from Drag Race UK pays tribute to grandmother

A Sussex drag queen paid tribute to her grandmother in a sentimental catwalk look at RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Dakota Schiffer, from Horsham, is the first trans woman to take part in the BBC show and said her grandma supported her “femininity” at a time when her parents found her difficult to understand.

She said: “From a young age, my twin Harry and I were always very attached to hair styling toys and dolls with long hair.

“We probably played with dolls until we were about five years old and then there was this massive intervention and they were all taken away from us.

“Our grandma didn’t think that was right and would really support our femininity.

“She didn’t force us to play with soccer balls or action figures or anything like that.

“She probably knew we were probably going to end up queer or trans or whatever she thought we were going to be.”

Dakota said that she and her twin would visit her grandma and play with curtain tassels since they were “the only thing that resembled hair.

“We just put them on our head and we braided them and we cut them and she never got mad at us — even though they were probably very expensive because she realized we were missing something,” she said.

As a tribute to her, Dakota walked the runway in a “curtain tassel fantasy” that RuPaul dubbed “Planet of the Curtains.”

The outfit featured curtain tassels dangling from her dress, while Dakota also wore a tassel skirt-style wig.

Brighton contestant Pixie Polite also impressed the judges in this week’s challenge, where the remaining nine drag queens were paired up to shoot an improv skit with Alan Carr.

However, she narrowly missed out on a win for her boyfriend Danny Beard, who amused the judges while playing the part of a television physicist. Danny is now level with Dakota in the competition, with two wins each.

Lancashire’s Sminty Drop was the last to be eliminated from the show after she froze during her improv performance and lost a lip sync to Baby to the Eighties British Classic Respectable.
